The New Inquiry: What We Talk About When We Talk About the Internet

hardcorefornerds:

thenewinquiry:

“Facebook and Youtube cannot fuel anything. Does the sentence “Paint brush fuels production of Sistine Chapel” have any meaning whatsoever? Facebook and Twitter will never help free someone who believes it is possible that they could. Believe the lie, told by people, that the network has autonomous power, above and beyond the power of the people who built it and use it, and ideology—not the technology itself—will defeat you.”

[…]

“Yet it is just this disastrous de-historicizing that the euphemistic nature of the Internet protects: by hiding the extent to which humans are behind every flicker of the computer screen, euphemism hides the historical nature of the Internet.”

Have you marked this as read yet?

I’d never heard of the New Inquiry until, well, now. I might have to make up for lost time, because the few essays I’ve read seem of quite high quality.

I’ve always been somewhat uneasy (has something to do with occasionally being so crushingly self-conscious, I’m sure) when it comes to computers and the Internet. Both are undeniably a part of my life (parts that I occasionally try and get away from, to varying degrees of success), and as much as I know I shouldn’t, I do occasionally find myself lapsing into the sort of mode of (non?)thinking that this essay attacks.
